According to the label Disflesh is a legendary band, but I’ve never heard of them before. This split is a re-release of demo and rare tracks so the sound varies a bit. Most of it’s ok but a couple of tracks have got a horrible guitar sound. Anyway, judging from the logo I would’ve guessed this to be straight up Discharge/Disclose worship, but that’s not the whole truth. As displayed in, for instance, When nations fall they’ve got a flair of metal as well, and thrashing riffs are a recurring phenomenon. Despite the fact that I’m a huge crust fan I have to say this does absolutely nothing for me. There are two main reasons for this. First off the drumming is excruciatingly boring since it’s a drum machine; there’s no drive to it, no energy, no vividness. It’s bland, dead, rigid and boring. The second reason is the vocal department; it’s a very bland scream without any real life to it, no anger or frustration, which is a big issue for crust (just as the d-beat drumming is). The riffing doesn’t really stand a chance in deliverance since the production is so digital and clean, it was a long time ago since I heard such a dead sounding recording. It only changes when the sound worsens, but that doesn’t bring any life to the matter either. It’s really too damn bad, ‘cause with a track like Chain reaction the power the music could possess is evident with the slick guitar line, good drum beats and whatnot, but the end result of it still winds up rather dead.
I’ve never heard of Slugfeast either, but their part of the split apparently contains all of their demo material. This is by far the bright point of the record, but one that unfortunately falters as well. It’s a gory and somewhat groovy grindcore inferno presented. A couple of tracks are pure old school gore, others are more to the death metal side of the matter whilst some are a bit more straight to the point pure grindcore. What sucks donkey dick is the drum machine, which absolutely extinguishes all prowess of the music. It sounds rigid and boring and lacks any real power. I have nothing against a lot of drum machine acts, in particular not when it comes to grind (I’m a huge fan of Pantalones Abajo Marinero, Dataclast and whatnot), but this just doesn’t do it for me. I’m not sure if the same guy mixed both this and Disflesh’s part of the split, but the dead sound in the guitar department’s the same. It’s once again really too damn bad, ‘cause Slugfeast definitely has some great tunes going on, but whatever catchy and cool groove they’ve got going on it just doesn’t come off as reaching its full potential. The murky and obscure gore reminds me of Fondlecorpse in a way, and that’s a comparison that means it really has potential. Too bad we won’t hear more from these Spaniards (with new recordings of better quality), seeing as they’ve now split up.
