Almost everything I review has been sent to me as a promo. But every now and then I buy a record and feel it’s too good to be left un-reviewed. It is just so damn great that I want to do my best to tell the world “this is a record you must own”. Now, neither of these acts really needs any introduction nor promotion, if you listen to the genre you know these beasts. But this is one of those records. I recently bought it, was blown away and haven’t stopped listening to it since.
First off is Depression, and who doesn’t love these fine Germans? It was a rhetorical question, ’cause I dare you to say you don’t dig it. But I’ve also come to realize something here. I think split 7”s is the ultimate format for this act. The dense, intense and brutal death metal infused grindcore leaves you craving tons more when it’s suddenly over after just a few minutes. Silence… Forevermore is an excellent display of effective riffing that sticks with you, and really urges you to rock along. But it also carries with it the usual energetic drumming as well as a seriously haunting break towards the end of the track. And hot damn, Deceived is the darkest and most anguished song ever by Depression. The lyrics are truly stark, dealing with the living hell love can put you through. Along with the pummeling bass sound and intense guitar this is one mean song. Ron and Marc’s deep grunts fit the recipe perfectly, and adds a level of brutality that’d get any old school fanatic piss his pants. I’m really impressed by this one. I mean, I’ve always enjoyed Depression, but the depression’s never been this overbearing before. Definitely one of their best.
On the other side we have the mad Frenchies called Inhumate. Now I know some people have a problem with their sound, thinking it’s too crude and rough. Then listen to this, ‘cause they’ve definitely never sounded this intense before. The banner of old school grindcore is in your face right from the get go, and just as the blasting suddenly commence the intensity is immense. The spastic riffing, the insane bass, the enormously brutal drumming and the freakin’ wicked vocals… This is the shit. I know I’ve said it before, but Christophe is an animal behind the mic. The two tracks on here are definitely the best material I’ve heard coming from this act. It has it all; death metal, old school grindcore, unorthodox breakdowns, brutality yet joyfulness. No matter if you’ve always loved or hated Inhumate you need to pick this up, ‘cause this is the shit.
