This has got to be the most raggedy-ass looking demo cover I've ever seen; consisting of a comically drawn (and humongous in comparison to the utensils) cock on a plate, with salt and pepper shakers next to it. The booklet (if I can actually call it that) looks as though a kid stole a pair of scissors from his unsuspecting parents and just went nuts with a piece of paper. But at least their logo looks damn cool. Anyway, this is the debut demo by this young Australian goregrind act. I have a soft spot for Aussie grind, it's as if they just can't go wrong down there.
The sound quality is absolutely abysmal, and the degree of horrific production somehow varies greatly in between tracks. I don't know who handled this, but I definitely advice the band to seek better skilled supervision next time around; this just doesn't cut it. And that unfortunately makes it extremely difficult to actually judge the music. But from what I can tell this is goregrind of the slower kind, which draws Bile to mind, whereas the somewhat rugged lo-fi edge Splattergasm also presents draws the Mexican goregrind scene to mind. However, amidst the burly rumble and distortion that is supposed to be the production one can occasionally decipher some quite cool riffing that seems way more planned than the majority of gore acts, and the death metal influences shine through. So they probably have the talent and ability to both write and perform catchy gore with tons of groove, but it's just so freakishly difficult to take this to heart when the sound quality is so bad.
It's evident the lads want a sense of humour to transpire, which I tend to have a problem coping with. Putrescence (a band I know Splattergasm's bassist is a huge fan of) have nailed it, but for instance Anal Cunt is completely lost to me. Unfortunately the short outbursts of clean vocals here rubs me the wrong way, so I can only hope they'll skip that part the next time around. And I seriously advice them to visit a proper studio as well, so one can actually fully enjoy this death metal-laden goregrind.
