He, Slayer anyone? Well, I can tell these guys sure are into ‘em!
The pain remits’s opening track (which also happens to be the title track) is a death-inspired thrash metal opus that at first throws me off balance with a metalcore-vibe. But after a little while I realize it’s just the vocals that are messing with me, and the reason is that they remind me a lot of Hatebreed. But don’t you worry, this is thrash metal! And that actually makes it a bit difficult for me, as I’m not really that skilled in the ways of thrash. I have a really hard time judging this. Slayer keeps popping up as soon as I start to analyse things. But don’t get me wrong, this is surely not a rip-off, it’s just that I’m too much of a novice to think of any other band. The thrash metal riffing is flavoured by a slick touch of death metal, and the melodic outcome is a harsh metal album of churning riffs, pounding drums and a harsh vocalist.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I know this is a self-released CD I’d eagerly be looking for the label logo. Every aspect of the album’s so professional it makes me wonder how much money they’ve actually put into it. But it also shows that they’re not into doing things half-arsed.
The album’s 25 minutes long, and with only five songs that leaves five minutes per song. And that’s just too long. The power of the tunes fades a little over time, most obvious in the ending track Faceless. It doesn’t matter if you break down with melodic solos; 6:51 is just too long!
