The darkest day… intro, and the outro, are pure bonus tracks, as the remaining four are previews of their upcoming album, to be released this spring. And this is not what I expected to come next from Scarecrow. Previously they’ve flooded me with horror-inspired Misfits punk spiced with a dose of hardcore and metal. But with Hangman it takes on a very different style of punk rock, as this is more in the American agenda of the 90ies.
While it still remains firmly in its horror roots I detect a hint of NOFX and old Offspring. But don’t worry, this is certainly not skatepunk. But there’s a certain melodic and groovy touch to the riffing at times, which gets me thinking of said bands. And that’s not the only thing that’s changed, as the vocals are of a much cleaner kind. Sure, he still carries the same raspy whiskey-drenched throat as on previous releases, but he varies it with a clean and more sing-along friendly version. This adds yet another melodic touch to it all. But, the music also has a much better drive to it, maybe courtesy of their new drummer, I don’t know. It’s just more aggressive in its presentation. All this while they retain a certain rough around the edges touch.
I’m not really sure what to think of this. I definitely like it, more than their previous efforts I think. But I think I’ll need the full album to really judge the material. What it does manage to do is get an interest invoked in me. And it leaves me even more confused as I keep expecting a blasting, raging black metal track to set in after Tomorrow will never come is over. It sounds a lot like an ambient intro you’d hear on such an album, and one of the best ones I’ve ever heard to be honest.
