My first time hearing Sanitys Dawn was on the Fuck…I’m Dead split 7”, and I really wasn’t impressed back then. And so I didn’t bother to check out their other releases. So imagine my surprise when I two years later get ahold of their split with Yacöpsae and was absolutely blown away by it… Well, this CD is a compilation of their splits with Fuck…I’m Dead, Exhumed, Magrudergrind and Mechanical Separation along with one unreleased track and 21 songs recorded live at the Giants of Grind fest #1 in 2004.
You can see the development from a mediocre goredeathgrind band with their earlier material, on to a monstrous goregrind band to end up as a killer crusty grindcore band. And so throughout all the songs the vocals change significantly from gored-out growls to rabid screams. I can’t really say if I prefer their mid or later material the best, ‘cause the goregrind sure is awesome, but the crazed grindcore they play now is really cool. So I’d say there’s something for all of you grind lovers out there, whether you like it brutal, heavy and gory or fast, kicking and screaming in your face attitude. But the album also contains the live stuff as I mentioned earlier. I had heard some of the songs here on the Giants of Grind #1 DVD, and I gotta say I prefer it with the visual aspect of the show. I can’t really say I appreciate the live stuff very much. It’s not very often a live CD is worth checking out. But that doesn’t matter as there’s a lot of totally killer studio material for you to enjoy, so the CDs still worth its price.
