This is one of those local bands I’ve heard of but never actually checked out. But with Martin Schönherr (drummer in Splattered Mermaids and former vocalist of Deranged, and here he does both) in the band I guess it was only a matter of time before I did. In fact, RazorRape used to be his own one-man band, but is nowadays a two-piece and Deep red is the first release since becoming a two-piece. And this brings absolutely nothing new under the sun, but that doesn’t mean it’s not any good.
Aftermath starts things off with a very cool, slow intro before the title track kicks things into gear for real. It’s predominately shorter, blasting tunes with a few heavier breaks, with the only real exception being Pieces, which is over three minutes long and utilizes some annoying moaning as well. But other than that we’re served gory and gnarly grunts, squeals and growls that’d put Last Days of Humanity to shame; since this was done without any harmonizers involved. And I guess musically it lies somewhere in between the previously mentioned goregrind gods and more death metal based acts such as Stabwound and whatnot. I’m not surprised to find a Dying Fetus cover on here, ‘cause things remind me a whole lot of some of their earlier works. And despite having been covered many, many times Kill your mother, rape your dog is a supreme track I just can’t grow tired of. But, I also have to say this isn’t the most exciting cover of it that I’ve stumbled upon. I think that’s much to do with the sound, which I’ll deal with later on.
There isn’t much to go on here since it only has a few ‘real’ tracks (that isn’t intro, cover and such). But it displays a death metal-infringed goregrind act that delivers both energy and brutality. The dominance of their sound would have to be the vocals, which are constantly in your face. The riffing on the other hand is fairly simple most of the time, and doesn’t really deliver any moments of awe. What one do notice is the tendency to mix slow riffing with fast drumming, which an interesting aspect to the tunes, but also makes a track like Beautiful girl hunter sound an awful like the following Dying Fetus cover. Anyways, it’s a cool EP and I’m definitely looking forward to hearing their debut fullength, which is due later this year.
However the production bugs me. The guitar sound isn’t heavy at all and sounds rather flat, and there’s something about the drum sound (in particular during the blasting parts) that gives me the impression it hasn’t been mixed and mastered yet. It doesn’t sound like they’ve just recorded it in the rehearsalroom, so don’t get me wrong; it just doesn’t sound like a finished product. So let’s hope that isn’t the issue for the fullength, which has been given the hilarious title Unleashing the shemales of vengeance.
