Just by looking at the artwork it’s quite obvious we’re dealing with a crossover-related act, and Piraña certainly are just that; a thrash metal/crossover band. And boy do I dislike the two genres, it really does absolutely nothing for me. Thrash metal is just annoying guitar riffs and bad vocals, crossover takes the (at times) fine hardcore genre and destroys it by incorporating just that. And the first time I put this little disc in my stereo and see it’s over an hour long and has 33 tracks I’m beginning to think I’m in for a long, boring ride. Thankfully there aren’t 33 songs on here. Including the intro and outro there are 13 songs, but before that last one you’ll have to get through 20 silent tracks á six seconds each; annoying.
Since I don’t really listen to either of these two genres I’m not really sure where the lads might draw influence from, but to me it feels very American (North American, to be exact). It’s a bit like DRI and Cryptic Slaughter teaming up with Kreator and Testament. Despite the cool comic book like artwork (which is really cool, in particular one of a piranha-creature hardcore kid attacking a zombie-esque nun nursing the pope) I can’t say I find this very entertaining. The vocals are very effective with its screechy, gnarly scream, the riffing is energetic and there are tons of tempo changes, but the songs are just too damn long. The effect is lost when the tunes are six minutes long, and I grow tired. I’d much rather have the songs cut down to two minutes each, I mean it’s not like they’re extremely creative all the time and need the extra four minutes to fit all their ideas into one song.
However at times they do add a little touch of creativity, as for instance in Living bomb, which starts off with a folk music-esque minute. That offers a much needed breath of fresh air since you’re enduring such lengthy songs. And as I said the riffing is energetic and your legs will no doubt tap along it is really hard to keep the attention going. This falls simply due to the exhausting length of the tunes and album as a whole.
