Previous to receiving a promo of Opitz’ split with Rubufaso Mukufo I had never heard of the band, but I certainly enjoyed my first experience with them. No wonder considering the guys still are or have been involved in a number of other grind acts such as Pigsty, Four Seats For Invalides and Contrastic. And this is their second release; an MCD clocking in at nineteen minutes. The first thing that comes to mind is definitely the weird artwork, and when you open the booklet up it gets even weirder. It’s like a disturbed children’s book, where each turn of a page creates a new image. I get mixed emotions of disgust and anxiety just by looking through it, confronted by its urban despair.
And after a cool intro the grindcore sets off. But what the hell, this isn’t grindcore, yet it is. The grindcore is the base of it all, and then they’ve taken on influences from all over the place. Hardcore, death, thrash and even fastcore can be found in their sound, and it has a very modern touch á la Rotten Sound. Nevertheless it feels typically Czech, and I can’t help but to think of bands like Ingrowing, Isacaarum, Rabies and Pigsty for comparisons. It’s somewhat like mixing ‘em all together in one big batch. The result makes for a very catchy EP full of tempo changes and breakdowns. The energy is at a constant high, and it doesn’t matter if the blast like crazy or show off some melodic adeptness. The guitarlines are catchy, the drumming is superb and the vocals are really varied presenting everything from deep growls, high-pitched screams and just plain hardcore shouts. Perfect tunes for a moshpit frenzy.
Opitz’ versatility becomes even more evident when you take the Dismember cover in consideration, which they pull off in a great way. And despite all of the various influences and genres mixed together the end-product is very coherent. Certainly worthy of your attention, and it even comes with a good production, which is so often lacking in grindcore.
