This is a long overdue discography, so it’s about damn time. But I haven’t always been a fan of Operation. The first time I heard them I thought it was quite boring, to tell you the truth, and so I never bought the Civil olydnad MCD. But with the purchase of the Frihet? LP I surrendered, and from that very first moment the needle hit the vinyl I was hooked.
And the so ever classic “Vi ska inte ta makten, vi ska krossa den” starts this CD off as well, and I’m instantly thrown ten years back in time. Back to the nineties when Operation inspired so many punks with their activeness in their local scene, with their militant and uncompromising lyrics, and with their powerful and raging anarchopunk. I don’t always agree with their propaganda, but one can’t deny that it gets the blood flowing and adrenaline pumping (almost to the point of your stone-throwing arm warming up). The lyrics are written in a flyer-manner, as a clear stand for their political views, no sweet talking around it, just to the point. But, the propaganda can become a tad overwhelming at times. I think it’s better suited for folks of a younger age, who haven’t fully developed their own opinions. Then you can probably buy into it all, but I’m still far from drawing huge circle-A’s everywhere.
But besides their uncompromising lyrics Operation produced some powerful tunes, with tracks like Militant kamp, Anarki…Alternativ and New age being some personal favourites. The latter one mostly for the absolutely raging tempo. Musically they linger somewhere in between crust, hardcore and punk, and I suppose anarchopunk is the best way to describe it. If you take bands like Aus-Rotten, Oi Polloi and Cress, mix it with Homomilitia and put a Swedish spin on it, and you have a fair idea of Operation’s sound. A very aggressive sound, an aggression upheld by the two screaming lads and the screaming gal. It’s distortion, chaos, punk and politics, and it kicks arse.
Particularly shredding is the Frihet? LP, but included is also their Destruktiv utveckling MLP and the Civil olydnad MCD. A huge downer for this CD is the lack of information. I mean, Operation where an important band for some years, and to release a discography and not include any info whatsoever on the band is just plain idiotic. The booklet says nothing about when they started out or called it quits, no info at all except the name of the band members. And that’s bloody annoying. But the lyrics are thankfully included (with English translations), and I suppose they’ll have to speak for the band.
