In the world of harsh old school black metal its a damn difficult thing to stand out of the crowd. This is Mordgrims third demo, and since I havent heard either of the old ones I cant say whats different about this one. But Ill do my best to dissect Dead world.
After a, maybe not so exciting, intro we get served a raw demo recording, with a sound which is just perfect for old school black metal. And the first thing that strikes me is that Mordgrim doesnt rely on speed, which is the case for most other bands of the genre, but on the cold riffing and grim atmosphere. Slow and heavy riffing, slow and ritual drumming with the occasional blasting. Pretty brutal and harsh screaming, conjuring the feeling of hatred and misanthropy. Included is a cover of Carpathian Forests Return of the freezing winds, which is a fairly decent comparison for the rest of the tunes. The influences for the material seems concentrated on the 90ies Norwegian scene with some Burzum shining through.
The sound, the riffs and vocals are perfect for an old school black metal demo. But in case theyd record an album theyd need to work more on the tightness. Its the same guy playing all the instruments, and since you cant play em all at once the drums and guitar arent always in the exact same place. Thats just a minor default though. Dead world is limited to 69 copies, so if you wanna get ahold of this harsh, grim and cold black metal demo you better act fast.
