Ok, so this is the predecessor to Moorgate’s latest demo Denial of reality. The including promo sheet said they weren’t happy with the result of the recording as the producer had never had a death metal band in the studio before, and music wise it showed how they had progressed from this to the aforementioned Denial of reality. To be perfectly honest I would’ve guessed it to be completely the other way around. Sure, the sound isn’t exactly perfect and lacks any real power, but music-wise it’s much more satisfying.
The cleansing is a fast piece of thrashing death with good melody while still remaining aggressive in approach. The slower sections have a great guitar lead, but the faster parts are really where it is. The blasting parts comes at you like a ten ton hammer out of nowhere, really sprucing things up. Vocally it’s harsher and deeper with the occasional high-pitched scream; just the way I like it. This track is also only three minutes long, which might be one reason for the appeal, since I find their tunes way too long otherwise. Like for instance the following track, When I am dead. It’s over seven minutes long, and that’s just too rich for my blood. Other than that it’s a slower song that brings some sadness to the table with its melodic riffing. If it was only half as long I might’ve enjoyed it more, but as of now I get bored.
The material shown on Sodomite land of the damned is more of a death/thrash variant, where as the newer demo showed a purer death metal style with more of a flirtation towards thrash. However it feels like they’ve nailed this style much better as it sounds more coherent and confident in comparison. It’s still on the more melodic side of the matter, which rubs me the wrong way, but with better appeal. As stated the production isn’t superb and the bass is almost nonexistent, but the sound wasn’t all that great on their later effort either.
