I think the only Maggot Shoes stuff I’ve heard before is the Embalming Theatre split. But I can’t remember at all what it sounded like, so I guess I didn’t really like it all that much. Unfortunately I can’t say I’ve been convinced by [f]EAR tERRORism either.
I can’t help but to compare them to the previously mentioned split partners Embalming Theatre. It reminds me a lot of the Swiss goremongers we all love, but a copycat gone horribly wrong. Ok, so Maggot Shoes is not a copycat, but the recipe is pretty much the same. What these lads do to ease up the grinding is to add some almost hardcore-esque moments of breakdown, like that of Cause for riot. But, since the music’s all metalized and heavy it comes off as terrible metalcore moments instead, so I don’t like it.
One can’t blame grindcore to be the most inventive genre today, and tons of acts sound pretty much the same with little variation. This is no different. The riffing is not very exciting, and feels bland. I get the feeling of them trying to spice things up with a dose of humour, a bit like Birdflesh. But it doesn’t work. All songs sound the same, to tell you the truth. Unimaginative grindcore that doesn’t really live up to the grind-part of the name. As soon as the speed sets in the tightness goes berserk, and it sounds a bit like youngsters who haven’t fully mastered their instruments yet. Vocally it’s better, but not a lot. The main vocals annoy me with the high-pitch screaming, but it’s eased up by the growling.
If you like simplistic grindcore with samples from The Simpsons and Futurama Maggot Shoes might be for you, but I want more. More quality, imagination, variation…
