One of the few times I’ve ever heard Kuolema was on the We come in peace compilation 7”, and I can’t really remember what it sounded like (so my guess is I wasn’t very impressed). But here I have the opportunity to get to know them a little bit better with a total of 46 songs from five different recordings (plus a live session, of course).
During the first few songs it sounds a lot like an old finncore band gone wild, beating the shit out of the drums and blasting like crazy. But over time I get the impression that’s exactly what Kuolema’s about; crazed crustcore the Finnish way, sped up and mangled the hell out of. It’s insanely fast for crustcore, and the absolutely shredding screams sounds more like something you’d expect from a Arsedestroyer album. I doubt anyone will be able to decipher the vocals, even if you know Finnish (which I don’t). The recipe is quite simple, creating short and spastic outbursts of adrenaline. Imagine the old stuff from Rotten Sound (before they went grindcore), Rajoitus, Terveet Kädet and whatnot, and just blast the hell out of it.
As the two newest recording sessions have passed we’re back to 2003 for the next recording, and with it the sound quality drops a bit. This is more like we’re used to hearing the old school crust acts, with a distorted wall of sound, more akin to Disclose and such. But we’re still dealing with the same insane, killer blasting. Only four songs during the entire album goes past one minute. And these short tunes are simplistic, in your face and full of rage. It’s just too damn bad the sound gets worse as the album progresses, and as we approach the 23 minute long live sessions it sounds like it was just recorded with an ordinary tape recorded, or ripped from a video film or something. So the sound is not what you’d hope for, but it reeks of Finnish drunkenness and chaos, that’s for sure.
