Back with a vengeance, or should I say: back with a depression and angst? As Kontrovers seems to move away from their raging political crust and on towards a more stark sound and feeling. Im not complaining, so dont take this the wrong way. But Kontrovers have definitely developed a lot from their first vinyl. Skendemokrati made me fall completely in love with these guys. The raging speed together with the pissed off political lyrics and the furious vocals just kicked my ass over and over again until I was nothing but a bloody pulp on the floor. Today Kontrovers shows a more mature side of themselves. They dont seem afraid to take on non-punk influences. Their metal influences becomes more and more clear, which gives them a fatter and heavier sound. We saw that on their first full length, S/T, too. But this is more fine tuned now.
As you might have guessed from my earlier ramblings here, the lyrics arent as political anymore. Or dare I say non-political? Well, no. Not completely lacking political touches, you can still vaguely notice them. Its all much more personal, about feeling disappointed, self-hatred, lack of sleep cause of anxiety attacks but then theres another one about falling in love and getting back your lust for life. So all hope is not lost just yet! Kontrovers also seems to be pretty fed up with all the bullshit circulating within the punk scene, as four out of twelve (only ten that has any lyrics) songs deals with those sorts of things. And as usual most of the lyrics are in Swedish, and just a few in English.
One of the vocalists nowadays is female. You can hear her inhale quite heavily before screaming, almost every time. This fits extremely well into the more angst-based lyrics, adding a touch of desperation. But it can also become just a tad annoying, but really nothing worth mentioning, to be honest.
I have a clear favourite song hear, Med ryggen mot vggen. Thats the one about not getting any sleep cause of anxiety attacks. Its most excellent lyric-wise, and since I, myself, have the same problem I fell in love with that song instantly. Its also one of those songs where Carins (the female vocalist) screams adds that touch of desperation to enhance the impression of the song even more.
So what have I missed? Hmm I still miss their earlier raging speed and straight forward political lyrics, but I cant complain. This is truly a fucking excellent CD. And by the way, the artwork is also rather cool! As Mr. T. would say: I pity the fool that doesnt buy this.
