When you’re a talented band like Japanische Kampfhörspiele, creative and fully capable of creating an album of seriously spastic and schizophrenic grindcore – why in the world would you record and album with such crappy and lame sound? Especially since this is their ninth recording. I just don’t get it. The awful sound quality ruins the whole experience.
But crappy sound set aside this is an interesting album. Raging grinding drums, mad breakdowns, weird and technical riffing and powerful growling and screaming. JAKA grinds in the school of Dillinger Escape Plan, but less technicality and more pure grindcore. The drumming is actually the most powerful and brutal aspect of the album, as it can switch very fast between slow and heavy to raging to death metal like pounding. And combined with some weird instruments/sounds thrown in every now and then I’d say this is really cool. But the lousy sound quality just craps all over it, and leaves me unsatisfied… But the brutality of the music leaves me craving for more. So it’s a very schizoid experience.
The CD also includes a weird-as-hell video. It’s pretty much like an old PC game where you have to investigate a city and locate a bunch of gasmasks… It’s weird and really cool, and I’ve never experienced a CD like it!
