When I received a demo with a band name like Intestinal Obstruction I was sure it was some form of brutal and gory death metal, so imagine my surprised when it turns out to be melodic black. Im not really sure what to make of this. Its quite cool every once in a while with some spaced out keyboard effects and a little unusual riffing and song construction. The vocals go from gnarly screams to deep growls and adds diversity to the tunes (not that it needs diversity, the tunes are already quite varied). A slow tempo and occult sound can quickly change to harsh, brutal blasting. Im never really sure whats lurking around the corner.
But despite all this Im still left a bit distraught. Misantrophy is a really cool demo that breathes some fresh air into my promo pile, but a more fitting (spaced out, so to say) band name and a much better production would certainly help these guys deliver the goods. I can hear the potential, but wrapped in such bad sound it has little chance to really get peoples notice. But I dont doubt even for a second that with the proper studio back up Intestinal Obstruction could deliver a marvellous album, becoming the new rage in the black metal scene. However Im a little bit confused about the Misantrophy title; whether or not theyve spelled misanthropy wrong on purpose.
