When the promo sheet says “sure to please fans of At the Gates, Depresy and Dissection" I don’t really know what to think. I mean those bands aren’t exactly alike. But this is a slab of technical death metal with keyboards.
From the first note it strikes me that the production could really use an improvement. Its thin sound lacks power, and from time to time throughout the album it sways a bit, which is really annoying. But if you look at the music it’s of an entirely different quality. Talented musicians keeping a tight approach to death metal with technical riffing and drumming, and adding melodic keyboard symphonies. The growling vocals are not able to serve its full purpose due to the lack of sound quality, but it’s definitely good stuff. The drums keep pounding, and never let’s go. And it’s the drums and vocals that really bares the album, ‘cause it’s the only thing that really manages to still stick out, and lay the lousy production aside. But even so, the best track on here is probably the instrumental Rise of Hyperion, which packs a powerful punch of raging riffs, grinding drums and a melodic keyboard.
Imagine adding melody and keyboards to Deicide and then mixing it with Hypocrisy, and actually maybe even a touch of Dissection, and I’d say you’ll have a fairly good idea of what Hyperion’s about.
