I had never heard of this act previous to receiving this promo, and when I first gave it a listen I thought it was a good display of old school death metal. But I guess I wasn’t paying that close attention to what I was hearing, ‘cause I completely missed the humongous load of black metal incorporated in their sound, even thrash. Not to mention the technical aspect of it. I guess technical and thrashing death/black would be a fitting description.
The title of the opening track Brutal as cunt couldn’t have been more fitting to the sound and approach of Guild of Destruction. The everchanging chaos they deliver is truly impressive. Said track starts off unrelenting right from the get go with a marvelously chaotic and blurry sound. The blasting drums sounds as though to get out of control at any moment, the heavy-as-hell and chunky-as-fuck riffing absolutely ear-rapes the listener as the varied growling puts the last nail in your coffin. The tempo goes from full-on stampede to slower and chugging, but no matter what pace it still reeks of chaos and speed all the way through, and they offer good ol’ headbanger friendly breaks as well as windmill crazed mangle. The vocals goes from deep growls to gory grunts to gnarly screams to everything in between, and it enhances the already established chaotic feel. But they know how to deliver atmospheric and beautifully melodic music as well, as proved with When angels fuck demons. An acoustic guitar and gloomy samples gets the song off to a melodic start before the chunkiness, brutality and raging chaos steps in to finish it off.
Guild of Destruction takes the best of American brutal death metal, Scandinavian old school death, American thrash and their native black and death metal. This melting pot is cause for a magnificently encompassing sound, where nothing’s out of place and the delivery couldn’t be more diverse yet to the point. They’ve truly managed to tame chaos, showing off characteristics of powerful aggression, forceful rhythms, slick technicality and vicious brutality. Damn, Australia’s really got some of the best surprises in today’s metal, and I’ve just discovered one of their most precious hidden gems.
