I was asked if I would accept a promo of Grimlord's new fullength album, and since I had never heard of the band I looked them up. To my dismay I found it was a heavy metal band, but since I have a policy of accepting all genres I said yes. But since I also explained I probably wouldn't be the right guy for the job I assumed I wouldn't be on the receiving end of a promo. To my surprise I found a copy in my mail one day, and the much dreaded task of having to sit through a much despised genre of an album was at hand. To my delight I found the opening track rather enjoyable, and for a moment I thought maybe it wouldn't suck after all...
Well, the title track (which is also the opening track) is probably the most brutal heavy metal song I've ever heard. Starting out with an almost circus-like atmosphere it gets off to a good start, and when the blasting commences I'm not really sure what's going on; blasting heavy metal, I didn't even know such a thing existed. Unfortunately the vocals don't live up to my hopes of a brutal album, and at times the clean voice sounds incredibly whiny and wimpy, absolutely ruining an otherwise schizoid listening experience. There's a sense of thrash and black metal influence at times, and that makes this one a rather interesting release. Unfortunately the vocals don't sound as powerful and convincing as they'd have to in order to deliver the same kind of intensity as the music. The fast tempo and lack of overwhelmingly melodic and in-your-face keyboard lines makes for a rather pleasant listening.
But that's only good for about two or three tracks, as I'm not sure what the hell happens after the first fifteen minutes. As soon as Shade of wrath angels take over the sound quality drops, the musical direction changes and the vocals are nowhere to be found. Sure, I don't miss the vocals, but what the fudge is up with the music... It's just pure heavy/power metal, lacking any kind of identity or flair to it whatsoever. It could be just about any other half-arsed garage band's demo. Honestly, this is just as horribly bad as I first thought it'd be, and I can't for the life of me understand why they'd include all of this random bullshit on the album instead of just releasing an EP with the three real songs. Bad move!
