Grace.Will.Fall - Second album CD
Genre: Hardcore Origin: Sweden Released: 2009 Website: Grace.Will.Fall Label: Midsummer Records Uploaded: 02.06.09 Grace.Will.Fall are going down a slippery slide. When I first heard them they were a metallic hardcore act that hadn’t really found its sound quite yet, and they followed with a split 7” of punkish old school hardcore, which in return was followed by another split 7” of a diverse mixture of crusty/modern/old school hardcore. But I haven’t heard their first fullength, so I can’t say where they went after that. Here we have the second album by the lads, and it feels like they’ve found their sound. But I did mention that slippery slide… I have to be honest; I do have a difficulty with the typical Swedish 90ies hardcore sound. And Grace.Will.Fall tends to lean towards a sort of Refused/Final Exit agenda, which doesn’t beseech me. However they flirt with both rock and metal at times, adding much diversity to their spastic music. And it’s spastic in a good way, as you never know what to expect. You might think you’ve gotten ahold on a song, and it’ll suddenly turn on you with abrupt tempo changes and style switching. This keeps the album fresh throughout its fifteen tracks, as it never gets repetitive. But what also keeps it fresh is the unorthodox instruments used to spice things up. Suddenly a banjo will emerge from the midst of screechy guitars, or an accordion will take hold of the music. And it’s these moments that really lifts the album to new heights. La fine, for instance, gives me the chills with its cold atmosphere and melancholic breaks – a fucking marvelous song that I can’t seem to get enough of. Another favourite is …By the way, the track that differs the most from the lot. Here they’ve gone for a harsh doom/stoner song that seems to linger somewhere inbetween Candlemass and Worship. I certainly wouldn’t mind them starting a side-project for this type of music, as the industrial-edged harsh misanthropic atmosphere is killer. I’m not that well dispersed in the hardcore genre, there are very few bands I love and listen to. So I can’t even begin to guess from where Grace.Will.Fall draw influences from, but I can certainly tell you I haven’t heard anything this diverse, spastic and energetic before, that still manages to come out as a flowing album. Despite having my objections I can’t help but to dig it. Tracklist: 01. The assassination of Peggy Sue 02. New song 03. Celebration 04. Heroine 05. Mother said 06. Dead to me 07. (So) 08.
