Ewig Frost is one of those bands that tries to keep the old school banner of black metal high, harsh sound and all. But unfortunately a lot of bands fail at sounding grim, evil and whatnot, since the productions not harsh; it just sucks. And unfortunately, yet again, Ewig Frost sometimes lean towards this. Although its not all lost in a sea of distortion, but the bass is never audible, and as soon as the blasting sets in all you can hear from the drums is the hi-hat.
Darkthrone and Mayhem are probably represented in great numbers, if youd look through these lads record collection. The raw guitar sound makes for a shattering old school album, and the wicked screaming fits the bill perfectly. If the production just didnt suck so much this would be one great album. I really do feel like headbanging when the blasting sets in, just for the absolutely shredding and cold atmosphere they pull off.
So Ewig Frost falters on the finishing line, as the music is rather good, but the production makes it fall flat on its face. Oh, and how annoying is it when theres 15 minutes of silence before a hidden track begins? Well, I hate it! But the hidden track is a live recording of the title-track, which sounds really great.
