Oh jeez… It’s not often, but it does happen on occasion; I’m forced to listen to, and review, a power metal release. It’s one of the metal genres I just can’t stand, mainly for its overly melodic sound, often pathetic lyrics and horrific clean vocals. Naturally a promo of such a genre has a serious disadvantage when coming my way, ‘cause in most likeliness I’ll hate it. Divina distopia is no exception…
I’m not sure where the thrash part of their style really comes in. The promo sheet refers to Eversin’s sound as ‘techno power thrash’, but to me it sounds more like a somewhat progressive power metal album, sans any significant amount of thrash. The opening track X.E.N.O.S. is abysmal, plain and simple. It starts off with tons of annoying guitar wanking, something I really don’t get, and as the track moves on it gets flooded with spacey keyboard lines that sounds as though taken from some old arcade game. The vocals are pretty standard, definitely nothing exceptional, and at times his English pronunciation is just plain weird. Unfortunately it doesn’t get any better as the album progresses. The base of their sounds is ordinary power metal, but they’ve flaired it with some progression, unfortunately a bit too weird on occasions.
I’m not sure if a regular power metal fan really would enjoy it all that much either, mainly ‘cause of its weirdness. For instance the annoying backup vocals in In the shadow of the roses, which sound horrible, but that I’m sure is meant to give it a brutal edge. The same track does however contain a fairly catchy keyboard line as well as a very soothing piano section. And there actually are a couple of occasions where even I can somehow get the appeal, like for instance the heavy chugging tempo of Wings ov tears or the opening to Suddenly, consisting of fairly beautiful acoustic guitar playing. The latter song also has strangely psychedelic keyboard playing, adding a 70ies rock touch. But for every little thing I actually like there are at least ten things I hate. The promo sheet calls it a mix of Megadeath, Annihilator, Iced Earth, Nevermore and Symphony X. That means absolutely shit to me, but maybe it means something to you…
