I’m surprised I’ve never heard of Emancer before, seeing as this is their fifth album. But this also made me very curious to hear what I had missed. And I wasn’t all that impressed. It took me quite a few listens to get the hang of the album, ‘cause this is not your ordinary, everyday black metal.
Twilight and randomness offers a very progressive and modern touch to the genre, getting the later work of Enslaved and Emperor. But I gotta say, I enjoy Emancer a whole lot more. While standing firmly in the black metal genre, there’s enough diversity, originality and new ideas to carry a sound of its own. The fast paced, straight forward black with raging riffs and screaming vocals breaks down into sections of more classic metal moments, just as well as unorthodox keyboard movements is accompanied by clean vocals. And all of a sudden it’s industrial ambience. But no matter the diversity and complexity it’s as fluent as a stream of piss after ten beers. The album isn’t overwhelmed with progressiveness, ending up as a mass of great ideas without any lineage. The song structure somehow manages to sound natural while bringing in several different styles into one song, no matter which song you’d put on. Mithrin’s instrumentalism (three lads in the band, but only one playing all instruments) is marvelous, as it’s tight and complex in all areas. Not an easy task when you’re writing and playing it all by yourself, so I’m certainly impressed.
While this might not be an album I’ll listen to over and over again it’s really enjoyable. Emancer brings a sound of its own, and anyone not afraid of unusual ideas should certainly look this up. Extreme, avant-garde, progressive, whatever. It’s killer metal.
