Ahh, jeez... This is just outright disturbing, unnerving, unsettling and oh-so-delicious. Didn't have any expectations from Drug Honkey, all I knew was to expect some form of doom metal, but I could never have anticipated a full onslaught of some of the most annoying yet compelling drone I've heard. This is so not your ordinary run-of-the-mill doom; this is some fucked up shit.
Straight from the get go the horrifying sound lashes onto your very innards, with vocals that seemingly gnaws its way through your mind. I have no idea how to even remotely try to explain what Death dub sounds like, it's something you have to hear for yourself. With a base of drone-like sludge an intrusive, ultra-heavy bass rumbles forth a melody (if one can actually describe it as melody), with rambling drums backing it up, an intensely dissonant guitar line steps in for the kill. Just take Communion as an example. Add harsh industrial noise and a psychedelic keyboard accentuating the already disturbing tunes and you have yourself a truly intrusive recipe for crazed-out drone. With the addition of the ever-so disturbing vocals, taking on forms of distorted screams and deep grunts, the power of Drug Honkey becomes inevitably unstoppable. It's enough to make any sane man claw his own eyes out in distress.
The album consists of so many aspects its hard to get a grasp on what's really going on, and each new track firmly separates itself from the previous one, leaving it really diverse. Take sludge, doom, drone, noise, stoner, hardcore, whatever, and put it in a progressive melting pot. I think I'm a little too sober to really get the full effect, but I can't resist the intensely crazy catchiness of it all. I've said it before and I'll say it again; this is some fucked up shit!
