There’s been plenty of talk in the Swedish ‘underground’ crust scene about Dodeskaden, painting the picture of the new messiah of d-beat. But I never really got it, as it sounded more like a band that needed some maturing. And I guess they’ve matured a lot since I heard them the first time, ‘cause this is at times really cool. It is ultra political left-wing views that’s presented through the lyrics, as we’ve encountered so many times before. As well as we’ve heard this duo vocaled anarchopunk before, but it’s still intriguing in all its simplicity and crudeness. Lyrically they deal with stuff like the Israel/Palestine conflict, right-wing politicians as well as drunkenness and a wish to just dance through a revolution.
Bands like Operation, Contravene and @patia No instantly comes to mind, and that means anarchopunk, alright. But there’s something more, something drawing Born/Dead to mind. This for the quite heavy and hardcore-esque crust edge. Musically it’s not very intriguing. Sure, there are some hooks, but for the most part it’s just plain ol’ punk, you know. Not technical, not re-inventing the wheel, just the love for music. What makes Dodeskaden interesting at times is the male voice, which is quite harsh and deep, really differentiating itself from the rough female screams. But this is just one of the places you’ll notice the low quality of production, as the two vocalists aren’t exactly places equally in the mastering, and her voice comes off as almost on top of his, and not besides. Oh well, as I said it’s just plain ol’ punk.
