Dismullet… Well, that’s a weird-ass name, ain’t it? And it doesn’t get any saner when looking at the artwork, which depicts a whale hovering above a city, and everything’s done in pink and baby blue. I guess this threesome’s not afraid of stepping out of ordinary boundaries for a genre such as grindcore. This is a young band (under this moniker and style, at least) and as far as I know it’s their first demo.
The Swedish flair is imminent, it doesn’t take long before I start making comparisons to later Nasum, Gadget, Infanticide, The Arson Project and such. But I guess there’s a certain hardcore touch to it all as well, which could be derived to Converge, maybe, and the more experimental and technical vibe to early The Dillinger Escape Plan, perhaps. But whatever acts might’ve influenced their sound they’ve generated a highly metallic hardcore demo and pimped it with grindcore speed. The riffing is quite hectic and frantic most of the time, with the occasional melodic lines interfering with the spasticity. But they’ll just as well chug, churn or simply groove; it’s all incorporated into their sound. Vocally this definitely differs from the ordinary grindcore mould, and it sounds more like thrashcore/crossover screams. It’s a bit too whiny for me, and could definitely use more backup of the growling kind. There is backup vocals of that kind, but with the high-pitched main vocals so in your face I feel the need for more brutality.
And that actually goes for the entire demo. There’s definitely nothing wrong with it, they do their thing very well. But it’s a bit too easygoing in my book, speaking solely as a grindcore freak. Some of it has to do with the rather thin production, and some I suppose with the vocals. But it is a sort of easy-listening grind, which probably could be resolved by a chunkier sound quality and more frenzy in the vocal department. And I’d also like more Swedish lyrics; it usually makes music feel more genuine when done in a band’s native tongue. However I have no doubt it’ll please people, I just want more brutality while on the other hand I can’t help but to sing along during the chorus (if one can consider it a chorus) in Elite, which is probably the most melodic part of the demo. And I have to give them big kudos on managing to slickly mix in whale song (at least I think that’s what it is) in Egoist.
