I’ve heard Boiler’s debut, but it didn’t make a lasting impression and it seemed too unserious for me to take the music seriously. Mixing humour and metal isn’t always wrong, but it’s a thin line to thread before the outcome just feels lacking in seriousness. So when I received this promo I was curious to see if they’d taken it to the next level, and if I this time could actually feel an impact from the tunes. It starts off with a very well-done and funny intro before Der mann umgekehrt proportional zur eisernen maske sets in. And when it does I instantly wonder why the hell the volume suddenly dropped; the intro is twice as loud as the rest of the promo, which doesn’t make sense. Not very important in the long run, but it still bugs me.
This time around the German lads sound more coherent and mature, like they’ve made damn sure to bring more brutality and groove to the table. They’ve also taken in a second vocalist, which adds more versatility to the vocal department. And vocally it consists of classic goregrind gurgles, growls, piglet squeals and everything in between. It reminds me a whole lot of what Stabwound had going on (although with only one vocalist), and also the earlier works of Abysmal Torment. And while not really lacking in power, the vocals somehow fail in conviction, I think it has to do with the fact that it’s just too high in the mix, at times almost drowning the guitar sound. And speaking of which it’s not the most technical riffing, but quite effective. It can be slick and almost on the verge of actually delivering a melody, to turn on you the next second and pound you to dust with the groove. The tempo changes rapidly between heavy churning to seriously slamming groove to fast-forward blasting. But unfortunately I have to complain about the production once again, since it halts the delivery of pure brutality. The guitar sound is too thin and the vocals too high, if it was heavier and more densely mixed it would sound way more brutal.
The entire thing sounds a bit like early Dying Fetus, taking the heavy death metal elements and blending in a huge load of European goregrind. As far as this goes it would’ve made a nice EP, but to last all the way through a fullength I’d like a buff in the sound department. But they have the versatility of song-writing down, so I’m sure they’ll be able to deliver in the future.
