I'm not exactly filled with joy when I receive a live album by a band I've never heard of before; it's a difficult task to judge a live recording if you've never heard anything studio recorded, 'cause I haven't got anything to compare it to. And looking up some stuff on the band I noticed they've released three fullengths (four, if you count a fullength worth of rehearsal songs) and five live albums, and that seem a bit much to me. But I try to keep an open mind and give the record a try, after all it's got freakin' awesome cover artwork.
Unfortunately it doesn't take long before anything and everything even remotely close to hope gets flushed down the drain. First off; the sound quality sucks. It's not only a bad recording that sounds like recorded with an ordinary tape recorder, but the sound at the gig must've sucked as well. I don't think I can hear the crowd even once, so either noone was there or they weren't exactly thrilled about what they saw and heard. I could go either way, 'cause this is some sloppy bedroom black metal that sounds like done by a bunch of thirteen year olds. The drumming (with a drum kit that sounds absolutely abysmal) is horrendeous, and as soon as the pace picks up the drummer's lost the pace. It's incredibly un-tight and sloppy in execution, and the bass sounds so cheerful I could even go as far as to say it could just as well have been undistorted, and maybe it even is. The guitar riffing is highly uninteresting, uninspired and lacks any catchiness whatsoever, but it does however resemble something close to thrash metal at times. The vocals just bug me, and it sounds kind of like a half-arsed misfire. And the guy's attempts to sound evil and grim in between tunes fail terribly.
I really can't for the life of me understand why anyone would be interested in releasing this, not even the trvest, most kvlt black metallers can enjoy this; I just don't see how anyone could. Most of the time it's not even close to tight, the music's bland and boring, the sound quality is weak and if I didn't know any better I'd say this sounded like mockery of the genre. And that goes for the live part of the CD, 'cause there are two bonus tracks. The first one is a rehearsal recording of Black angel, that actually sounds fairly good in contrary to its live version heard earlier on the CD. The second bonus track is a Sarcofago cover that also sounds fairly cool. But two fairly good tracks don't make up for the abysmal 45 minutes you have to sit through before you get there.
