I’m not very familiar with this band so reading the accompanying promo sheet really did me good. For once it was quite an interesting read instead of just hailing the band and the record as the most innovative, interesting and greatest shit ever. You wouldn’t believe how many times promo sheets are like that. But this tells the story of the band, going back to 1987. So eventhough Out of sight is their first fullength you know the band’s not made up of spring chickens.
And considering it’s a grindcore act hailing from the late 80ies they sound pretty much as you’d expect. Napalm Death wouldn’t be stretching it too far in ways of comparison, but certainly not all the way. The album carries a very crusty edge, and I imagine Discharge stands for some influence just as well as Agathocles. And somewhere in the middle of these three bands you’ll find the sound of Belching Beet. But for a band to categorized as grindcore they are certainly using their grinding scarcely. And a lot of the times it makes me think of Agathocles later era, with a more mincecore oriented sound. However, in a song like Who killed Kenny? you’ll hear a more rocking hardcore sound, and taking the step over to Meaning of life it feels almost Misfits-like. So there’s certainly a lot of variation to it all.
Lyrically it’s mostly political stuff, with the exception of Who killed Kenny? (which is, not surprisingly considering the title, about the South Park series) and a few personally flared agony-stuff.
I’m not thrilled about the album, and it doesn’t appeal me a lot. The most interesting track on the album is actually a cover, Belching Beet’s take on the South American revolution song Hasta siempre Comandante. But other than that I’d much rather listen to Agathocles good outputs.
