I’ve never heard of the band, and I don’t receive black metal demos that often (and there’s no doubt this is black metal, that was obvious as soon as I saw the cover). With artwork consisting of guys in corpsepaint carrying a dagger, and a picture of a church there are no mistakes to be made guessing genre.
The slow, agonized and chilly riffs accompanied by the tortured vocalist sets the mood here. Feels like mixing Burzum with Darkthrone and adding a touch of Shining. Well, a lot of bands fail terribly trying to create vicious old school. But the tempo really sets these guys apart from the rest. Most other bands rely on the blazing speed, but Avsky keeps it slow, letting the riffs do the talking. And the cold sound and high quality screamed vocals keeps it real. I really like this stuff. It’s moody, raw and mesmerizing. The vocals adds a touch of angst, and about 2:13 into Embrace Armageddon he shortly goes off into a gnarling screaming maniac. And speaking of which, I’d say that’s probably the best track on here. But don’t get me wrong, the rest are no wimps. A high quality demo that leaves you wanting more.
