Some angst-ridden riffing introduces this demo, and the raw, gurgling screaming sets in. The sound is way better than most black metal demos, and it’s a very cold and melancholic atmosphere the sound is representing. For Total ecplise the heavy and pummelling bass is lurking in the background, creating a dark and murky mood. Only for the guitar and drums to break the murk and the harsh vocals to completely annihilate any traces of murky sound. The riffing throughout the demo’s extraordinary, and it switches back and forth between the speakers. The last track is a Burzum cover, and that is also a fairly good representant for influences.
It’s a really awesome demo, mixing both old and new school. But I’m a huge fan of grinding black metal, and since the tempo’s on a constant mid it kinda makes me wish for more. But I can tell you this, if Ascaroth would just blast like hell every now and then they’d really be on their way to greatness.
