I was very skeptical towards Aquila’s previous demo, and waited for a long time before I even gave this one a listen. But what I notice right off the bat is the highly improved sound, as it carries a much greater punch. Although I’d say it sounds too digital and clean, and lacks warmth, it’s still an improvement.
Musically it’s better, but still way too much metalcore for me. It’s sort of an Mnemic style, flavoured with Arch Enemy, Machine Head, Soulfly, Hatebreed and whatnot. Well, at least that’s what if feels like to me. Very melodic, with emphasis on rhythmic groove and technical guitar work. Although mainly rather slow, there are moments of speed.
I’m not sure I get this type of music, to me it just sounds forced and overly thought-through. It feels a bit like they’re trying too hard. Sure, there are some breakdowns that will probably please the metalcore kids, but it’s too much breakdown. And to cover it up they throw in an annoying guitar solo. Nope, not for me.
