I’m utterly confused as to why I received this album, and I’ll explain why. It was originally self-released back in 05, re-released in 07 by Stygian Crypt along with re-releasing one of the band’s old demos. I guess that’s all fine and dandy, except for the fact that they released a brand new fullength earlier this year. So the question is why they sent me this promo instead of one of the new album. I can only imagine the new material to be much better recorded, ‘cause this is just plain horrible.
The guitar sound is utterly weak and thin, rendering it completely useless in ways of delivering heaviness and power. The drums are way too popping and thin and the vocals don’t even sound mixed. And speaking of the vocals I have to say the vocalist should either get some lessons or get someone else to do the clean singing. In the emotional sections, such as in A secret revealed, the clean voice falls short of delivering real emotional value, and winds up ruining it instead. It’s still fairly acceptable in said track, and it sounds much, much worse in others. It’s a two-man band, and the drummer should at least have had the decency to tell the guitarist he couldn’t sing. Scream/growl wise it works, so no real complaints there except the production issue.
The new dawn is a conceptual album, where the storyline follows some guy named Jack who believes his DNA’s been stolen, leading him to America, unveiling some great hidden alien conspiracy. Unfortunately the lyrics aren’t always very well-written, which sadly ruins its effectual value. Musically it follows the storyline rather well, as for instance in Awake from an evil dream when the music takes a turn for the blasting variation, it fits the story perfectly. But some prolonged, and way too melodic, sections feel just plain redundant, and the three minutes of pure guitar wankering in A secret revealed is a perfect example of that. I can’t say I care much for the music, it’s often too heavily dosed with more classical sounding heavy metal, at times rather thrashy. I guess that serves as one part of their progressive element, where the other is some unorthodox song structures. But the main bulk of their sound is still melodic death metal, a genre I can’t cope with. Sure, it’s momentarily interesting, but most of the time it’s just melodic guitar wankering, and I just don’t see the point.
