Wow, it’s actually finally here. I didn’t think it would ever be released. I mean, it was recorded back in mid 2004, and have been circulating the internet pretty much ever since. So now, in 2008, I had no hopes whatsoever that it would ever be released. And while I’ve stumbled across this recording on the net several times, I’ve never seen the track titles for it. So when it finally got released I thought I’d finally have a chance to get a better acquaintance with the songs. But oh no, that’s not the case. No lyrics, no titles, nothing. Just brief info on the band set along the minimalistic artwork. So in many ways it’s an unusual album.
With Tunneln i ljusets slut (which by the way is a weird title, seeing as it means “the tunnel at the end of the light”) Acursed continue on their path the presented on the Fallout split LP, going from a more standard type of Scandinavian crustcore to a much more mood-ridden, angst-filled, depressed hardcore/crust mixture. And I gotta say I love it. People can hail From Ashes Rise all they want, but Acursed is the shit. Not that it sounds all the same, but rather that it carries much of the same atmosphere. The bleak message of the spoken words paint the picture of a highly suicidal, clinically depressed man, and that message carries on into the music. Dark, heavy, metallic riffing lays a brutal foundation of sound, whilst the powerful pounding of the drums takes it one step further, topped off by the harsh and agonized screaming. The hard-hitting crustcore can at times take a step back to let some even moodier parts of melody take place.
Tunneln i ljusets slut is a very stark album made up of powerful music writing and years of depression, combined into a seriously shredding metallic crust album.
